I thought i would post our beginning fluff here. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The aslanta system has been cut off from the imperium for some years after a warp storm went through the intervening area, Orks had attacked before the storms. During the storm the remaining defenders on the planet were transmitting a signal for help but none could get there. Once the storm moved on the signal weakly got through to on of the WarSeer chapter's battle barges Nauta Astarum they immedialtely responded to help. After getting in system and making contact with the last holed up guard and a few marines a War in Heaven era hulk comes crashing into the system. Once the WarSeers see this they send out an all call to imperials within a quick transition distance. Once the call for help is sent the WarSeer commander Avian immediately lands forces to help support the surviving imperials on the planet while sending fighters to recon the hulk as he isnt sure what it is. Once more marines and IG arrive in system he is appointed general commander and starts the recon of the hulk in more numbers. When the inquisition shows up the marines get jumpy. They dont like the inquisitors so close. As the hulk slowly drifts in system another warp disturbance is detected. The WarSeer battle barge is hailed "This is Chaplain Zadakiel of the Angels Imperator. We received your distress signal and came as soon as possible. We put our battle barge Death's Retribution at your disposal...What do you need?" As time passes more astartes ships arrive as they are faster then the imperial navy vessels. By the time Battlegroup Exterminatus(the imperial navy BG carrying the IG) arrives a total of seven chapters have at least one company there. The WarSeers are alittle suspicious of the Angels Imperator as they responded very quickly and seem to be hiding something. Due to the restrictions on manpower that centuries of warfare without reinforcement cause Tech Marine Volanaar decided to improve upon the automated weapons technology to help his fellow marines defend the base complex. He was eventually able to hook the bodies of wounded guardsmen into the turrets improving pretty much everything they do. The marines on the planet have been around a long time and have become hardened by the centuries of war...They are the 5th battle company of the Angels Imperator. The planet of Tiorl had been a recruiting planet of the Angels for some time before the warpstorms and orks arrived. A small garrison of marines was always kept on the planet to warn the chapter if ever there was an enemy incursion. This small garrison detected the orks as they came in system and immediately sent a message to Grand Master Gabriel. He dispatched the 5th as it was closest to the Tiorl system. The 5th arrived to start the cleansing of the orks when the warp storms blocked their passage home... --------------------------------------------------------------- Our task will be to capture the hulk and rescue as many of the remaining Angels Imperator on the planet. No time can be wasted. We must hold back the forces of the enemy. They cannot be allowed to get this hulk. This will be a fluff driven campaign similar to Medusa V. Your fluff will determine the outcome. You can decide what happens with enough responses. I want to say something now. I'm not in charge of you guys. I'm only here to compile your fluff and let you know what happens. You can completely ignore me if you want. I will be playing in this campaign using marines but i wont take charge of anything as i know what the other races are doing and that would be cheating woulnt it? So your on your own for this. You can ask me any questions you want and i'll do my best to answer them. May the emperor protect -Scorpio

There are 2 factions within the marines that you play as for this campaign. The first is the incoming marines. For which you can play with any kind of force. The second is the hold outs on the planet. For the holdouts a very veteran army should be used. A first company or something similar would be great.

Why don't we nuke the ork city from orbit?

Good question.
How many of you have ships geared for orbital bombardment? This might be your first hurdle, alongside the fact that everybody else has a space presence - including the Orks.
They're not likely to have their fleet sit around and watch while you spend hours leveling a "city" big enough to be seen from space with lance strikes and torpedoes. Most races aren't going to wait to see what area of the planet you're leveling before they decide to stop you - it could be their landing site.
Add to this that it would probably eat up a good deal of your ship-board ordnance and there's a whole load of enslaved humans in Orkopolis, and you see how this isn't just a matter of pushing a button and going on with the fight.
I'm not saying you couldn't bomb Orkopolis out of existance, only that you should consider where this leaves you and that it will take some preparations and support from the other players to do it.
Even then, you don't know how much resistance you'll meet...

You could start an ongoing plot with that if you wanted... It would take a concentrated effort including the guard and inquisition. Its your choice.

I didnt realize that the orks had much of a fleet. If they did wouldn't they have tried to stop the Imperials from landing?

Of course they tried to stop you from landing!
Your own fleet and the remaining planetary defense vessels had to earn their pay getting you here, and don't you forget it. It's a mess up there, and you're lucky to be amongst the survivors who reached the surface (though the story would be quite dull if you'd been killed in the attempted landing). Just the other day a batch of Eldar ships blew up some of the Imperial vessels in orbit (check the Eldar batreps).
I supppose that "fleet" may convey the wrong imagery, though. With Orks, it's more that they've got a large collection of asteroids (with guns, engines and life support) that they call ships. These "ships" gather in a space-borne mob, which is generously referred to as an "Ork fleet."
The Orks are well-established in this system. Expect a good number of Roks, Ork Hulks, and other haphazard Ork vessels up there. We haven't begun discussing Surface-to-Orbit planetary defenses, either.

Not that the orks have many surface-to-orbit planetary defences. They want to fight us.

Actually, Orks use Tracta Beams and Tellyportas to snag objects that come too close to their planet and turn them into Ork vessels. Fly into orbit over a well-established Ork city, and you may well find yourself boarded by Orks directly from the surface. They'd get their fight.
Planetary bombardment is no simple matter.
