I don't think this will really apply to anyone else since I'm the only one actually playing as Centariuans, but I decided to lay out some of the "rules" i'm using to determine titles and ranks for the PDF.
The caste system for fuedal Centarius is relatively simple. There are four basic castes; Peasant, Artisan, lord, and Nobility.
Peasants are the common folk and make up 70% of the population. They are your average farmers, herders, shephards, tinkers, etc. They have the least amount of soical standing, very few "rights" and are typically sworn to a local lord in return for protection, tech services, and other things they can not provide for themselves.
Artisans are the skilled laborers and workmen. They have valueable servise that requires special training as a result, they are accorded higher legal status. The typically swear fealty to a lord, but are not subject to the same binds of loyalty as a Peasant. This segment is about 15% of the population.
Lords act as the overseers and managers for the Nobility. Typically they have sworn fealty to a Noble in exchange for land and authority. Lord status and fealty are hereditary and can not be changed lightly. This class has a great deal of property and legal rights via-a-vis the noble class. In addition, if an artisan gains enough prestige or wealth they maybe elevated to the Lord class. This class represents 10% of the population.
Nobles are the members of the political and military elites of the society. The positions are hereditary, and it is entirely possible to be a noble with no land, no wealth, and no lord underneath you. In the majority of cases, the nobles own large tracks of land that they parcel out to Lords, who then parcel it out to peasants. It is land ownership (and accompanying benefits) that provides the nobles wealth and prestige. This class is 5% of the population.
All children of Nobles are also nobles, however the Centariuans follow a system of primogenitor. Only the first born noble son inherits the land and titles. The rest, by default become Lords. It is typical for the other children to become soldiers of bureacrats.
In military terms, only Lord's and Nobles maybe officers. Some of the specialist branches are Artisan only, but you often find the artisan and peasant classes form the lower ranks.
The rank structure is simple:
Trooper
Sergeant
Lord
Viscount
Count
Baron
Duke
Most Company commanders are Lords or of Titled Rank. The titled ranks also correspond to the amount of land ownership of the noble. The more land the larger the title.
Since tanks are rare in the Centarius PDF, all Tank commanders are of the Lord class.
I hope this made some sense. I primarily wrote it down for my benefit. Thanks.
