Okay, I don't know if this is something I would or even should do most of the time, but I thought I'd post a little Player's eye View of my week 1 Batrep.
The Game was 1000 points of Eldar vs my friend Alex's 1000 pts of Space Marines. We played a custom scenario I made up based on my Intro Story Here:
warseercampaign.proboards101.com/index.cgi?board=nbf&action=display&thread=1170664024
I made a custom character to represent Reghild (a Pathfinder Leader). For 48 pts he had the same abilities as a Pathfinder with +1 WS, +1 BS, +1W and an additional CCW. He would count as an Independent Character and take an HQ slot.
The scenario had two man sized Warp portals defended by Reghild and his two 8 man Ranger squads. This accounted for approx 350 of my 1000 pts. I limited myself to only infantry models due to the size of the "portable" warp gates.
The marines would be allowed to start with 350 points of their army driving on from the table edge on turn 1 and they would go first. Other than this they had no restricions on availability.
The forces ended up as follow (this is approximate -- doesn't include wargear or powers)
Eldar
Master Pathfinder (Reghild)
8 Rangers
8 Ranger
5 Harlequins (Shadowseer, Troupe Leader, Death Jester)
6 Warp Spider (Exarch)
5 Fire Dragons (Exarch)
8 Dire Avengers
8 Dire Avengers
Marines
Chaplain (2 Wound Version)
8 Marine Tac Squad in a Rhino
5 or 6 Marine Tac Squad in Razorback
8 Marine Tac Squad in Rhino
8 Marine Assault Squad
Predator Destructor (LC Sponsons)
The Game:
Alex started by bringing on his Razorback squad and one of the Tac squads in a Rhino. They drove on and the Razorback squad deployed behind cover out of LOS. In my turn the scouts tried for the snowball's chance AP shots on the two vehicle (Snipers have a flat 2d6 penetration roll now WooHoo!), but despite hitting a lot did not roll any 11's or 12's.
Turn two Alex moved his deployed Tac squad into the woods they were behind and ran the other Rhino squad forward and disembarked. His assault squad also turned up from reserve this turn. His razorback fired with its TL Hvy Bolters killing 2 scouts from the first squad -- they promptly failed their morale chack and ran back through the gate! The other Tac squad Shot with their bolters at the second scout squad, killing four of the eight, but they made their Morale test (at this point I had yet to make a 4+ cover save). In my half of the turn the Warp Spiders and Harlequins showed up, moving on from the gates. The Spiders shot at the Large tac squad and the Harlequins came fleeting from the gate into assault. The tac squad lost and the Harlies pursued, catching the marines and continuing combat.
On turn three the rest of the marines showed up, and the assault squad and chaplain attacked the Harlequins. The Harlies held out, and in my turn the Warp Spiders charged in to help. The problem was that all I got this tuen was the Fire Dragons. They showed up, and moved onto the board, but their fire was blocked as the Rhino which had dropped its Tac Squad had parked right in front of the Warp Gate where they had to come out. Dead Rhino right? Wrong! Al five dragons fired. Two hit (BS 5 Exarch missed). Still two penetrating hits. Results 1 and 2. As the turn ended, the Original Tactical squad was finished of in melee and the Assault Squad greatly diminished, but the Spiders were down fro 6 to 4 and the Harlies were down to 2 of 5.
The game went Pear Shaped for the Eldar from there. The Harlequins and Spiders were attacked by the second full Tac squad, and while they finished off the Assault squad they couldn't kill the chaplain, so the following turn the chaplain finished off the Spiders and the Marines killed the Harlies for few losses in return. Along the way the remainder of the scouts were picked off one at a time by the Razorback, but they kept making their Morale checks. The predator Destructor put 2 AC and 2 LC shots into the Fire Dragons killing 3 despite them being in cover. The Dire Avengers still failed to show up.
Finally on turn four with the Eldar reduced to 2 Fire dragons, Reghild, and 1 Ranger, the Dire Avengers showed up. Too Little too Late. As the Marines proceeded to fall back to 24" (after 1 volley from the DA killing 1 Marine) they finished off the last Ranger and the last two Fire Dragons. We called it at that point as the Dire Avengers grabbed the wounded and fell back through the gate voluntarily.
So that's the report. It must be said I made a total of less than 10 saves in the whole game while the Marines failed very few. There were a few tactical errors as well, but we do not speak of those. ;D
